Dear Fellow Marketplace Believer,

How has everyone been keeping? Considering the events that have unravelled since we last met – deaths of Little Yueyue and Steve Jobs, euro debt crisis, downgrade of US debt, mass cleric resignations in the church of England, floods in Thailand – we wonder how all these events have happened in a short span of 4 months!

But it’s times of shaking that throw up opportunities to guide conversations in the Marketplace towards the UnShakeable One, and point to the assurance we can draw by simply trusting in the name of the LORD our God (Psalm 20:7). By His Grace, as a support network of Marketplace ambassadors, we’ll learn how fellow ambassadors are blessing their workplaces, and share how we’ve been channels of blessings. As iron sharpens iron, let’s watch the baby steps we take together with the Father and each other snowball into bigger and better things!

What a privilege it is for us to be ambassadors of God’s Kingdom in the Marketplace. In the busyness of work we sometimes forget that role we have. Other times, we embarrassingly “blow it” and try to convince ourselves that we’ve totally lost our right to be a witness for Christ at our workplace. How hard it often feels to wear the name of Jesus in the marketplace!

But the truth is that no matter how badly we manage “Kingdom Ambassadorship”, we cannot un-qualify for something we never qualified for in the first place! By His Grace, we became and now remain His ambassadors “to do the good works which He has prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph 2:10). How can it be? It can only be part of the mystery that is “Christ in us, the Hope of Glory” (Col 1:27). We believe in God but we sometimes forget that God believes in us too. And he’s never wrong.

And there’s more! He has given us fellow Marketplace ambassadors to be encouragers, supporters, counsellors…..a whole support network exists out there for us! We’ve only begun to scratch the surface of how to connect with others like us and use those relationships to be a blessing to each other so that each of us can, in turn, be a greater blessing to others at our workplace. This is the heart of MCX.

Towards that end, we are organising this informal evening get-together. Details are listed below. Please fill up the form to register.

About Jacob Damkani

Jacob Damkani grew up in a religious Jewish home that in 1977 came to know the Messiah, the God of Israel. Seven years later in 1984, Jacob founded the mission organisation “Trumpet of Salvation to Israel” which is dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel to the Jewish people, in Israel and wherever else in the world they may be. Since that time he has sought to help his people discover for themselves that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is their own Messiah.

In 2007 the Lord blessed “Trumpet of Salvation to Israel” with a new Community Centre called “Gilgal”. The centre is located in the heart of Tel Aviv with 50 guest rooms, a worship sanctuary, a library and a coffee shop.

“Gilgal” enables them to host teams and individuals who want to develop deeper relationships with Israelis and to create more opportunities to share the Gospel with the lost sheep of the House of Israel.

Jacob is also the author of “Why Me”, an autobiography that opens a window into the Jewish-Israeli environment and how the Church and the Messiah are viewed by this contemporary culture. “Why Me”, originally written in Hebrew, with more than 100,000 copies in circulation, has helped to lead many Israelis to a saving faith in the Messiah. Today it has been translated into English, German, Finnish, Hungarian, Russian and Korean.

Francis Frangipani once said: “Before God does anything great, He first unites His Church.”

Before we can see breakthroughs in the family, we must first be united. Before we can see breakthroughs in the church; we must first see the church united.

This series examines two very important keys to a church united; namely the power of alignment and the power of agreement. When these two keys come together, it brings a corporate anointing that is greater than the sum total of our individual anointing put together.

These spiritual principles are not just true for the Church but also true for our families and organizations. So come and explore the power of unity through this study!

On the 16th of March we’ll be holding a special evening session with Ms Landa Cope. You can find details of the time and venue, as well as RSVP for the session here.

During the session we’ll be hearing from Ms Cope on three key questions:

Transformation. What does the transformation of a nation look like? How do we go about transforming/shaping/discipling our nation?

Christians and politics. Which is the biblically correct position? Christians must be involved in politics; Christians should be involved in politics; Christians should not be involved in politics. And why? If we are to be involved in politics what are some of the principles to guide our engagement so that we perform both our civic and biblical duty? To what extent should we impose/press our biblical values on society? We know only too well that every now and again debates come up premised on how governments ought to allocate limited State resources to different groups among its population in a manner that is just and equitable. Governments bailing out troubled banks with public funds has been a common example of late. Sometimes however, this debate is drawn along the lines of what the Christians feel might support or encourage ungodly behaviour- eg where funds are spent in ways that condone say promiscuous sex, drug abuse, abortion or a homosexual lifestyle through say government subsidies for Aids medication, or the distribution of free hypodermic needles for drugs or even condoms. To the world whom we describe as being spiritually lost and blind, do we and indeed should we-as representatives of a God who is not only righteous but loving and full of grace- openly oppose such policies? is it Christian social responsibility to engage in a debate that essentially has us opposing the subsidised medical care of a group of people who suffer sickness as a result of a reckless lifestyle at the expense of those (implicitly more deserving) who would otherwise benefit from say more dialysis machines being made available to them.Or Is this just another means of expressing a view on how we wish our tax dollar spent or not spent so that it is little more than just voicing a personal preference on an issue of public policy where no referendum is available? Or are we (by a nicer name) merely pronouncing judgment where we ought not to?Please note that i am less interested in the politics behind the issues than I am about how the Believer in the world ought to wisely and courageously take his or her stand/respond in a way that pleases the Lord.

Marketplace ministry. How to balance between church ministry (our assignments via our local congregation) and marketplace ministry? How to address the lack of “authority structure” or “covering” for someone engaging in marketplace ministry? For example, if I want to start an office fellowship group or a office bible study group, who would I be “under”? Who should I be accountable to? What ministry or organisation would I be a part of?

For Singaporean Marketplace Christians

In keeping with the MCX mandate, we have asked Landa to address us on some of the marketplace issues which are most on our hearts. This is why we want to give all MCX’ers a chance to let us know what topics they would like Landa to provide refreshing insights on. As we anticipate a healthy exchange of views, we will also be inviting a respected Singapore-based consultant, Dr. Matt Rawlins, to act as MC and Moderator for the Session. (Visit Dr. Rawlin’s profile page)

Come early and join our fellow Xchangers for some food, cocktails and fellowship before we start the Session. One of the Exco Members will be contacting each of you to obtain your view on what you would like to hear Landa share on and to provide you with further information on the planned evening.

We truly hope you will be able to join us. Please use the form below to register your interest.

So this is my take on where things are at… the “on-the-ground” feel… the current sentiment of the christian in the marketplace.

We have had a lot of marketplace seminars, conferences and meetings here in Singapore over the past 4 years. As a result, the idea of marketplace ministry is no longer foreign or fresh. Most Christians are now aware that they have a God given role to play in their workplace that goes beyond earning a living.

But why has there been so little progress?

Firstly, I believe that it does take time for the “Marketplace Movement” (not specifically referring to MCX), like any other movement, to gain traction. But I also believe that the slow progress has been due to a lack of encouragement.

Pioneering is hard. Starting anything new; a fellowship group, prayer group or any other initiative, always requires extra time and energy. In our demanding and fast paced society, few have the courage to step out and do something. Everyone is waiting for everyone else.

That is why we need “en-couragement”. Getting some successful Christian business person to give a talk and rally the people won’t be effective. What we really need is encouragement from the average christian (you and I) serving God in the daily grind- the actual front-lines of marketplace ministry.

What we really need is encouragement from the average christian serving God in the daily grind- the actual front-lines of marketplace ministry.

They want to be inspired by (and to inspire) men and women who are in it with them. Who face what they face and are still pressing on. They want to hear testimonies from people like us and find out if it is really worthwhile.

So essentially that is what MCX is trying to do. To bring one muddy marketplace solider face to face with another muddy marketplace solider so that together, they can charge the hill.
